(Updated: 09-11-08) Large Hadron Collider With all the talk since yesterday's announcement of activating the Large Hadron Collider, I felt I just HAD to write something. For those of you (living under a rock?) who don't know what the Large Hadron Collider is: Wikipedia has a good article here and CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) official LHC page is here. Basically it is the largest (but certainly not the first) particle accelerator complex in the world. It is intended to collide opposing beams of protons at speeds approaching that of the speed of light and to study the results in the hopes of proving and furthering some scientific models and research. I won't go into a lot of detail because basically it's being talked to death right now all over the web by various 'reporting agencies' since it was first fired up yesterday. The thing that gets me are all the idiots replying and commenting on the articles. The responses range from "We're all gonna die!!!" "Stop it now, I'm scared" to "It's a waste of taxpayers money" "Are they trying to disprove God?" to the completely inane "I like cheese and cheese products" Given that most forums of any kind/size (especially those allowing anonymous posts) will get its share of random stupidity this is still ridiculous! Examples: The ignorance is overwhelming! I wanted to write more... but every time I hit refresh there are 20 more posts... and there are so many articles with comments... it makes me sad to think of the internet filling its tubes up with all this fear and stupidity... You could have asked me yesterday and I would've been like 'No fucking way is the world going to end or anything bad happen from this." If anything we will learn and progress as a people. If there WERE any negative side effects / results something would have been noticed and recorded in some of the smaller particle accelerators around the world. But now... now I actually hope something bad does happen. I hope it blows a chunk of the world away or turn us into our own black hole. If it did the universe would be better off taking out all these idiots in one fell swoop. I believe mass ignorance is the first sign of the apocalypse.
